Open the simulation for magnets and electromagnets and go to the bar magnet tab. Make sure that the “show field” and “show compass” boxes are checked and that the strength is set on 75%. Make some observations below about the magnetic field that surrounds the magnet. Observe how the compass changes as you move it around the magnet through the field. 2. Increase the strength of the magnet to 100%, what happens to the magnetic field? 3. Decrease the strength of the magnet to 50%, what happens to the magnetic field? 4. Click the box “show planet Earth” and observe how the magnet lines up with the orientation of the Earth. Part 2: 5. Switch over to the Electromagnet tab in the simulation, once again make sure the “show field” and “show compass” boxes are checked and we will be using DC power at 10 V for this simulation. Set your number of loops to 1 this produces a solenoid which produces magnetic fields. Observe the strength and direction of the magnetic field generated. Use your compass to confirm the direction of the field. 6. Increase the number of loops to 2, observe what happens to the field. Increase to 4 loops, observe what happens to the field. 7. Change the voltage of the battery to 5 V using the slider on the side of the battery. Observe what happens to the magnetic field produced. It gets weaker, electrons move more slowly 8. Slide the battery slider all the way to the left to 10V. Notice this changed the direction of the battery, observe the changes that makes to the magnetic field.
